Heat exchangers and process go hand in hand and, when looking at the total investment in equipment for chemical pants, are possibly the most important pieces of equipment and deserve considerable engineering attention.
A lack of performance in a heat exchanger can have significant negative effects in the process chain. A reduction of temperature of feed to a reactor may mean less heat in the form of process steam is recovered and, in turn, more heat rejected to cooling water. An underperforming feed preheater to a distillation column means additional steam is required in the residue column. And on it goes in just about every process application.
Whatever the process the correct heat exchanger operating to design is vital for proper processing. Because there is often several interrelated heat exchangers in a process system there is a compounding influence in the malfunction of one or two heat exchangers and it is often difficult to pinpoint the source of the deficiency in maintaining plant efficiency.
Heat exchangers are overwhelmingly used for cooling but, particularly in the industrial sector within plants and refineries, they may also be used for heating.
Many industrial and dairy, food and beverage processes require heat and cooling to function. Heat exchangers are critical for keeping food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, machinery, chemicals, water, gas, oil and other substances at safe and effective operating and processing temperatures.
Heat exchangers are also used in process applications to capture and transfer steam or waste exhaust heat that has been released as a by-product of the process and ensure the energy is not wasted into atmosphere but put to better use increasing efficiency, saving money and helping the environment.
