Fluid Dynamics and Sterling Thermal Technologies, present Avantair, Sterling’s derivative of the Heat Pipe which was conceived in 1998 as a low maintenance and efficient cooler for the wind turbine and generator market. The combination of the very effective HEI block fin together with the extremely efficient thermosyphon technology produced a winning combination resulting in the ‘Avantair’ cooling system.
The Avantair system is a closed circuit, generator mounted, cooler that is compact, economic and capable of close approach temperatures.
Heat Pipes, also known as Thermosyphons, were initially developed for use in the space industry but are now widely used across the electronics and industrial sectors. They work on a refrigeration cycle to provide greater cooling capacity and closer approach temperatures than otherwise available with a traditional air-cooled system. Thermosyphons work on a fully enclosed system with no moving parts and use differential pressure to drive the refrigerant from the condensation to evaporation end of a sealed tube.
The condensation end of the Heat Pipe is subjected to the higher temperature causing the contained refrigerant to boil which, due to the differential in pressure, then causes the resulting vapour to rise to the top of the tube where cooler air is passed over the tube and the refrigerant condenses and returns back to the condensation end.
The Avantair product has been successfully used to upgrade open circuit machines to close circuit operation extending the system’s life and providing significant reductions in maintenance. The Avantair is a much more compact alternative to the traditional CACA cooler and is a ‘plug and play’ alternative to complex water cooled solutions.
